Build a scrolling text pattern from a short message
A scrolling text time waster repeats a phrase in a pattern you can watch, pause, or move through yourself. Start with something short such as “Open after sunset” and see how the layout changes when the lines move. A wave shifts each row back and forth, stairs step the text across the screen, and a pulse narrows and opens the spacing. Banner keeps the start of each row in the same place. The preview contains its own scrolling area, so the editor and the rest of the page remain available while your design moves.
The pattern has two parts you can change independently. Pattern sets the placement of the text. Direction sets the axis along which the preview travels. A vertical Wave draws attention to the changing indent as the rows advance. Horizontal movement reveals repeated copies of the phrase along a row. Try the same message in both directions before adjusting the colors. It is easier to decide how fast a message should move when you already know how much of the phrase fits inside the preview.
Start with a line that fits the display
Short phrases work well on narrow previews because more of each line remains visible at once. If you want to announce a longer message, put the main detail first. An input with multiple lines rotates through those lines in the pattern, so you can split “Doors open at eight” and “Bring your ticket” into separate lines. Make each line understandable on its own if it could appear briefly without the other.
How to make scrolling text online
- Enter a phrase under Message. The tool renders a repeating pattern immediately. Add a line break to alternate messages.
- Choose Wave, Stairs, Pulse, or Banner under Pattern. Change Direction to compare vertical and horizontal motion.
- Pick a color palette or adjust Text color, End color, and Background. Turn on Gradient to blend between the two text colors.
- Adjust Scroll duration to control the time for a pass. A longer duration moves through the same preview more slowly. Use Lines per fade to change how far the color transition takes to reach the end color.
- Use Play, Pause, and Restart to inspect the result. You can move through the preview with a wheel, touch, or the arrow keys while it is paused.
- When you are ready, copy the pattern, copy a link, or download it as TXT or HTML.
Randomize selects a combination of pattern, palette, and duration. It gives you a starting point while retaining your message. Use Clear to remove the message or Reset to return to the starting design. If you want to compare layouts precisely, keep the same colors and duration and change the pattern alone. This helps you see whether a difference comes from the indent, the movement, or the color.
Set speed separately from the number of lines
Duration describes how long one automatic trip takes across the scrollable area. A longer message in a horizontal preview may have more distance to cover than a shorter one at the same duration. Adjust the number while watching your actual phrase. Slow the preview if you cannot read the words in one pass. For a background pattern that is mainly decorative, select a simpler message so the motion does not compete with other content nearby.
Colors and animation controls for scrolling messages
The preset palettes offer starting combinations. Classic uses purple and magenta on a light background. Midnight uses light colors on a dark field. Sunrise and Lagoon give you warmer or cooler alternatives. Custom colors are useful when the scrolling text needs to match a project. Check both the starting and ending text colors against the chosen background, since a transition can bring part of a phrase close to the background tone.
Lines per fade changes the number of rows over which the color blends. A small number makes the sequence change color over a shorter distance. A larger number makes the change slower across the pattern. It has no effect when Gradient is off. Monospace gives letters and spaces an even width, which makes the stepped layouts easier to compare. Try it alongside a banner from the ASCII art generator if you are working with a text layout that depends on columns.
Pause motion when you need to read or edit
Turn off Auto-scroll to leave the preview still by default, then start it with Play when you want to see the movement. The tool respects your device's reduced-motion preference for automatic playback. It also pauses automatic work when the preview leaves the screen or the browser tab is hidden. The message remains selectable and the scroll area is available for manual browsing. These behaviors are helpful when you want to edit the text without the result moving under your pointer.
Share or download scrolling text
Copy text and Download TXT give you the same rows of plain text, with the spacing and line breaks that create the pattern. They are useful if you want to paste a section into a document or keep a copy in an editor. Text files carry the words and spacing. The preview's colors and movement require a viewer that supports those features.
Choose Download HTML if you want a standalone browser file that preserves the pattern, colors, direction, and playback controls. Open the downloaded file in your browser. The controls inside the file let you play or restart the motion. It works as a web page, so attaching it to a chat or dropping it into a social post will usually share the file itself. If you want a friend to open the design in the editor, choose Copy share link instead. The link contains your message and settings, so use text suitable for the people who receive it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I scroll the text without turning on animation?
Yes. With Auto-scroll off or playback paused, focus the preview and use the arrow keys, wheel, or touch. If the layout fits entirely inside the visible area, there is no extra distance for it to move.
Can I animate a face or a styled name?
You can paste text faces, Unicode letters, and emoji into the message. A small design from the emoticon library is a good test. Different fonts can change the width of those characters, so look at the result in both directions before sharing.
How do I return to the beginning of the preview?
Use Restart to move the preview back to the start. Use Reset when you also want to restore the default message and design settings.
