The Kee Kwan Motor Road Company was established in July 1927. It was set up as a transportation service to promote and develop business between China's Kwangtung province and Macau.
A highway was created along the route first established in 1894 to connect Macau with mainland Kwangtung, which borders both Macau and Hong Kong to the north. The highway was opened to the public on March 18th 1927, which is when the transportation service made its inaugural run. The roadway would eventually expand even further north, where a steel bridge was constructed that crossed the Taiwan River.
The Kee Kwan Highway Company, Ltd. was conceived by the villagers through whose district the road was to pass. It was formed under the management of Mr. Cheng Tze-sheung, which issued both stock certificates and banknotes, with a capital of 0,000 divided into 40,000 shares of each.
This company still exists as a state owned cargo and passenger transporter between Macao and the mainland.
