This detailed antique woodworker's chest is certainly the work of a master craftsman.
The basic case is made from 4 wide planks, joined with hand cut dovetails. A simple baseboard runs around the bottom on all sides. There is also a band that runs around the top, which when combined the edge around the lid somewhat mirrors the base. The exterior of this antique tool chest is finished in a brown stain.
The lid is flush on top, although it is made of 11 separate pieces (not counting the edge banding). When the lid is open you can quickly see the purpose of the individual sections, as they for 4 recessed panels surrounded by stiles and rails, much like the construction of a paneled door. A beveled molding runs around the perimeter of each panel. The stiles and rails are finished in a putty colored paint, while the panels and molding are stained in a reddish mahogany color.
Inside the base of the chest are numerous sliding trays on 3 levels. All trays can easily be lifted out or slid from front to back to access the trays below.
The two top level trays have lids. Each lid is divided into 3 flat panels that are made from birds eye maple surrounded by darker framework.
The next level has a larger tray with some dividers. One section of this tray, which appears to be designed for drill bits, is removable with another section below.
The lowest tray is dived into 2 sections.
Below the bottom tray is a larger storage area and a section for hand saws. Some of the supports for the hand saw have broken off.
The lock in the base and latch attached to the lid appear to be intact but we have no key so it is unknown if the lock is functional. The top of the lid has a narrow flat iron strap to protect the side and back edges. The heavy iron pulls are original. There are wood runners on the bottom of the chest to keep it raised off he ground.
As can be seen from the photos, this is a very unusual antique tool chest. Although not perfect, it is a beautiful work of craftsmanship and something you would be proud to display whether you are a serious antique tool collector or want to use it as piece of furniture. This would make a wonderful coffee table. If you have the room it would display nicely with some supports holding the open flat with a glass top across the entire piece.
This piece has been in personal collection for about 40 years.
